The Release of 11 ISA Detainees: What About the Others? - 2006/10/20 13:54 http://www.malaysianbar.org.my/content/view/5299/2/

Let's not forget that there are others who are still languishing in Kamunting. We must urge the government to release all ISA detainees or charge them in Court, and ultimately to repeal the ISA.

If over 3000 lawyers could attend the EGM and question the proposed amendments to the LPA, why can't the same people rally and urge the government to repeal the most draconian law in this country (nb: the proposed amendments to the LPA are nothing compared to the ISA). Where are the people who claimed that the proposed LPA amendments are repugnant and in contravention of the rules of natural justice? Wake up and smell the reality, the ouster clause in ISA is by far the most draconian clause ever to be inserted in an act of parliament.

Re:The Release of 11 ISA Detainees: What About the Others? - 2006/10/20 14:40 My dear Hamzah

I support your view on the ISA in toto. It has been around for nearly 50 years and the Malaysian legal community has not succeeded in doing anything about it.

Meanwhile, we have prominent leaders who tell us to confront the Government on the LPA, even telling the Government not to gazette the amendments or to gazette selected parts of it when they know fully well that we have to rely on the goodwill of the Minister concerned on this matter and so should not show the mailed fist.

And these are the leaders who are so callous as to label people who disagree with them.

It is about time we as a Bar doing something more serious about the ISA, the Judicial Crisis and other issues.

Maybe, we should select a day every year and wear white arm bands to show that we are dead serious about such things.

Re:The Release of 11 ISA Detainees: What About the Others? - 2006/10/20 15:50 Perhaps the Bar Council Human Rights Committee may enlighten the rest of us about the current status of the remaining detainees in Kamunting and come up, if deemed necessary, with an appropriate press statement on the plight of the said detainees.
