2ND ASIA-LAWYERS FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT 2009 - 2008/12/23 10:25Dear Members,
The 2nd Asia-Lawyers Football Cup 2009 will be held in Langkawi, Malaysia from 4th March to 8th March 2009. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Bangkok but due to the recent political developments there, the organisers of the tournament (the same establishment responsible for the Lawyers' World Cup) has graciously agreed to bring this prestigious tournament to our shores.
The tournament will be organised with the assistance of the Malaysian Bar. All members who are interested to participate are entitled to register a team. This will be a tournament with at least 8 teams participating from all over Asia. Each team will play a minimum of 4 games over the 5-day tournament period. This is a full 11-a-side football tournament. Teams will play full games of 30mins per half with limited substitutions. For a tournament of this nature, a squad of a minimum of 18 players is required.
The defending champions are the Teheran Lawyers from Iran.
This tournament doubles up as an informal gathering of lawyers from all over Asia, with a tournament draw and a grand dinner to enable teams to interact with each other. The Malaysian Bar has had the experience of participating in the 13th Lawyers World Cup in Turkey 2006 and the 1st Asia-Lawyers tournament in Bangkok 2007 and found the experience exhilirating. It is not an opportunity to be missed if you are a football fan and a player.
As usual the Malaysian Bar will be sending its team to participate but would welcome any team of lawyers from within the Bar to set up a second team. The terms and conditions of registration are stated at http://www.asialawyers-footballcup.com

Bar Football Training Cum Trial starts tomorrow at Padang Merbok, 6.30pm. Please bring running shoes. All are welcomed. We also have tentatively booked the Bangsar Sports Complex Artifical Turf on Thursday from 7-9pm.

Please be informed that due to insufficient teams, the Asia-Lawyers Football Tournament in Langkawi has been cancelled. The organisers of the tournament, regretfully, had to cancel the tournament as only four teams, including Malaysia confirmed their participation.
The Malaysian Bar team had been in training since December and is disappointed with the cancellation, especially after agreeing to assist in the hosting of the tournament in Langkawi due to the recent political problems in Bangkok, the original venue of the tournament.
However, the team will still continue with their training sessions in preparation of the forthcoming Malaysia Singapore Bench & Bar Games. All members and pupils are invited to attend trials for the team. Please call Isa Aziz Ibrahim at 012 2001262 for further details.
