Circular No: 166/2007

Date: 30 August 2007

To members of the Bar and pupils-in-chambers

THE 14TH MALAYSIAN LAW CONFERENCE - CALL FOR APPLICATIONS OF THE YAYASAN TUN SUFFIAN SPONSORSHIP TO THE CONFERENCE

In collaboration with the Malaysian Law Conference Organising Committee, the NYLC is pleased to inform that Yayasan Tun Suffian has agreed to sponsor 10 young lawyers/pupils-in-chambers to the upcoming 14th Malaysian Law Conference on 29-31 October 2007.

The Conference promises to be a major event in the Malaysian legal calendar with varied sessions on topics such as the Constitution, criminal justice, young lawyers and globalisation. HRH Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah will grace the occasion by officiating the Conference while our Honourable Prime Minister will be delivering the Keynote Address.

Consistent with the previous Conferences, a rich array of working papers will be presented by the speakers and useful insights will be gained by the participants. It will also be a great opportunity to network and enrich relationships with other members of the legal fraternity, and those from academia, civil society, Governmental and other institutions.

The Conference details and registration form may be downloaded here. The full programme of the Conference will be released soon.

As part of Yayasan Tun Suffian and the Bar's continuing project to encourage varied professional education and development programmes in the vast and fast-moving era of legal practice, we would invite members and pupils-in-chambers to make applications for the said sponsorship. The sponsorship will only cover the registration fees of the Conference.

If selected, the following conditions of reciprocity are expected:

That the participant shall compile a report of the day's proceedings attended (minimum of 1 A4 size page in English or Bahasa Malaysia) accompanied by photos to be sent to the NYLC by the end of each day of the Conference.

The reports may be reproduced (after editions) in the names of the participants by the Bar or Yayasan Tun Suffian in their publications.

That the participant shall compile an executive summary of the Conference (minimum of 3 A4 size pages in English or Bahasa Malaysia) to be sent to the NYLC within 10 days of the end of the Conference. The summary should include issues, proposals or recommendations which the Bar should consider and the participant's personal account of how the Conference has/has not benefited him/her.

The summaries may be reproduced (after editions) in the names of the participants by the Bar or Yayasan Tun Suffian in their publications.

That the participant should choose and serve actively on one committee of the Bar Council in the following term (2008/09).

These terms are binding, and any failure to adhere to these terms will constitute a default resulting in an immediate obligation on the participant to repay all expenses disbursed by Yayasan Tun Suffian on his/her behalf.

As a practical working guide only, the Bar Council adopts a definition of "young lawyers" as those being under 40 years in age or 7 years in practice. Applications are however open to all, and those who have not attended conferences previously are strongly encouraged to apply. Yayasan Tun Suffian and the Bar shall administer the usual selection process based on considerations such as those of need, relevance, past experiences and contributions to the Bar and civil society.

For those who are interested, kindly send a completed application form (attached) to the Bar Council (attention: Ms Chandrika Bhaskaran) by 30 September 2007 by fax to 20322043 or email chandrika@malaysianbar.org.my.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully
