The "Other News" Section - 2007/03/21 00:24Dear Webmaster,
We, members of the Bar, are eternally indebted for your proficiency in administrating this Website. And for that, allow me to personal express my gratitude for carrying out this often thankless task.
That said, I noticed that as at the time I posted this post, the "Other News" section lists the following items for public viewing:
1. Blair 'war crimes' case launched 2. Top Pakistan government lawyer quits over judge row 3. 5 Pakistani judges resign in protest 4. Lawyers protest in bid to save legal aid 5. Law Society fights decision to clear lawyer
Perhaps you were thinking of highlighting this recent survey (20.03.2007 at 15.54 GMT) by the BBC which quotes statistics that 60% of the participants surveyed consider the war in Iraq to be wrong. Interestingly, the article was headlined as 1 in 3 think that the war in Iraq to be right. (See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6467147.stm)
If I am wrong in this, please accept my humble apologies. If I am right, then it may be sensible to redirect that recalcitrant link since a large number of people may be reading what is, in truth, dated news.Best sig ever - Religious war at its most basic level is a disagreement over who has the best imaginary friend.

The BBC news item seems to have the substance of the actual complaint.
What is interesting is the ICC Prosecutor's call in his interview in the Telegraph for more countries, especially those from the Arab world, to ratify the Rome Statute for the ICC.

Re: The "Other News" Section - 2007/03/21 15:27Dear Webmaster,
Thank you for rectifying the link to the one by the Telegraph. Interesting point though i.e. whether copyright permissions are necessary when you merely link to a 3rd party's content from the Malaysian Bar webpage and redirect readers to the 3rd party's page.
If so, then we may need to prohibit members of the Bar from providing links to 3rd party websites in their forum posts. I think Shanmuga and me would be likely culprits in that respect.
Dear Shanmuga,
Always a pleasure to read your instructive posts. For the record, I echo your sentiments that Malaysia should ratify the Rome Statute.
Of course attempting to get the ICC to try the "Bush-Blair cabal", even with Iraq being a signatory to the Rome Statute, might take some legal acrobatics.
USA, though a signatory to the Rome Statute under the Clinton administration, has not ratified the same. Even worse, it has since - under the present Bush administration - stated that it intends to "cancel" USA's signature on the Rome Statute.
All of this is further compounded by the promulgation of the American Servicemembers' Protection Act and the Nethercott Amendment which further impacts on ICC's efficacy to deal with complaints of this nature.
But international idiosyncrasies (or international idiocy depending on your perspective) should not prevent Malaysia from being a party to the Rome Statute. The cause of an international justice system is after all a noble one.Best sig ever - Religious war at its most basic level is a disagreement over who has the best imaginary friend.
