Good News on Cheque Payments ... and Thanks - 2008/11/24 15:24“Cheques may once again be issued for payments over the deposit/revenue counters of the Courts,” save for those which remain on the Court’s defaulters list, according to a Malaysian Bar circular dated Nov. 19, a copy of which I have just received today.
Many thanks for the kind intervention of the Chief Justice of Malaya following a memorandum that our Treasurer, George Varughese, and his team sent to him earlier.
The enlightened move is welcomed. It is enlightened because the decision means the majority is not unfairly punished by the cheques dishonoured through the dilatoriness of the minuscule minority.
I know it is the silly season when we again elect our Bar Council officials for another one-year term. I have also endorsed the call by some young lawyers for more of our members to vote. We must vote wisely and ensure not only that those who can deliver the goods are elected, but also that those new faces who ask for an opportunity to serve are given due consideration.
In this connection, while I declare that I have no axe to grind against the veterans, I feel that some of these veterans should make way for the new faces so that these eager beavers can use the Bar Council as a training ground to develop their innate leadership skills for the future of the Malaysian Bar. Given an opportunity, they will have to prove before Father Time whether they have the cut.
In our pursuit of the noble, an internal-external balance must be struck between voicing against the injustices that we see around us and developing professional standards. The latter may well include a massive overhaul of our administration at the secretariat. With the recession coming on, the secretariat must be made lean and mean.
My dear George Varughese, and all those who have served this eventful term that saw the Walk for Justice on the anniversary of the demise of Tun Suffian, including but not limited to my friends, outgoing president Ambiga Sreenevasan and Malaysian Bar webmaster Roger Tan Kor Mee who is not seeking re-election, thank you very much for your time and effort expended for the cause. Your sacrifices have not dropped on barren soil.
