CAN FATAL EMBRACE BE AVOIDED?

Top Umno leaders will be well advised to heed what Soi Lek has said about the acceptability of Malay leadership and the non-acceptability of Ketuanan Melayu.

In this instance, Ketuanan Melayu is not about Malay Royalty which is not just provided for but entrenched in the Federal Constitution.

There is no doubt that Malaysians of all colour and creed accept the institution of Malay Royalty as one of the bulwarks of our constitutional monarchy. And Malaysia is undoubtedly a constitutional monarchy!

The support that the MCA has enjoyed so far was severely and may be irreparably dented in the March 8 general election because MCA leaders have been perceived to be far too subservient to Umno for far too long.

MCA supporters are basically political conservatives and what these conservatives want to see is respect being accorded to their leaders who are not there to serve themselves but to serve their "constituency" - if ever such an imaginary constituency exists.

From the time of Tunku, it is already well known that MCA will never die electorally because it has been given Malay majority constituencies controlled by Umno for more than 50 years.

The results of March 8 have shown the volatility of the Malay electorate and, left unchecked, this volatility may well lead to the irreparable damage that the MCA must now confront. This threat to the MNCA cannot be ruled out is that Umno no longer controls the Malay heartland it used to for the last 50 years.

Let not history record that the MCA embrace of Umno will finally prove to be a fatal one.

So we are told that "sensitive race relations issues should not be openly discussed".

Is Ketuanan Melayu a sensitive race relations issue? If it is, then why has it been openly talked about by UMNO politicians?

If it is not, then why warn against its discussion?
