According to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in 2006, 1 of every 8 American had their identity 'stolen' on the Net. Someone pretending to be you using your name on the Net can do much damage to you.
This problem is so serious in US, that almost every state in US have laws specifically governing this.
