The Bar Council’s Human Rights Committee is pleased to announce a unique training programme on media law. The programme targets those who already have a working knowledge of libel and other laws affecting the media.

With speakers from England, the US and Malaysia, the training aims to train participants to bring a holistic and practical approach when defending the right of freedom of expression of the media. The training will include the latest developments in libel law, protection of a journalist’s sources, and strategic tips on challenges currently facing some media owners, journalists and bloggers in Malaysia.

Amongst the speakers are:-

· Mark Stephens who is Head of Media at the London solicitors firm of Finers Stephens Innocent. The Times newspaper, which recently listed him as one of the UK’s 100 most influential lawyers, calls him ‘Mr “Media Lawyer” himself’.

· Robert Balin who is Co-Chair, Media Law Practice Group and a partner in the New York office of the US law firm of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP. He is involved in all aspects of media litigation, and frequently writes and lectures on this topic.

· Charles Glasser who is a former journalist turned lawyer and trainer, and is the high profile media counsel for Bloomberg News. In 2006, he edited the International Libel & Privacy Handbook: A Global Reference for Journalists, Publishers, Webmasters and Lawyers, published by Bloomberg Press. Much of his work involves training members of the media on how to exercise their freedom to speak responsibly.

· Malik Imtiaz Sarwar who is an advocate and solicitor and President of HAKAM. He frequently writes on issues involving freedom of expression, and is involved in defending a number of bloggers and online journalists in various litigation, both civil and criminal.
