It has been 17 years since the 1st Conference of Lawyers of Asia and the Pacific (COLAP) was held in New Delhi, India, under the auspice of International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL). The next two conferences held in Tokyo, Japan (1991) and Hanoi, Vietnam (2001) continued to serve as a unique platform for lawyers and other professionals to share and exchange their views and understandings on various issues concerning peace, human rights, sustainable development, environment and globalization that affect all of us living in the region.
Since the last COLAP in 2001, the world has witnessed dramatic changes in terms of security in connection with the so-called "war against terrorism" as well as increased threats to peace and personal liberty amid the mounting tension in various communities both within and outside the territories with regional conflicts. The region of Asia and the Pacific with great disparities in terms of economic development and human rights, is still in need of a regional system to enforce fundamental human rights, to redress injustice, and to ensure peace and sustainable development.
In this light, the Korean Organizing Committee for COLAP 4 is pleased to announce that the 4th COLAP will be held in Seoul on September 2-3, 2005. This year's conference will be a forum of rejuvenation where diversified voices of the delegations representing many countries in the region will be heard through constructive and informative discussions under the conference theme of "Peace, Human Rights and Co-Existence in Asia and the Pacific."
We at the Korean Organizing Committee for COLAP 4 would like to extend our warm greetings and a sense of solidarity to all of you fighting against threats to peace and violations of human rights in our region and would like to invite each one of you to the conference to be held during the beautiful autumn season in Seoul, Korea.
