PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has agreed for the price of gas sold to the energy sector to be reviewed earlier than the scheduled revision in June.

Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said he had brought to the attention of the Cabinet the urgent need to look into the matter, and the possibility of reviewing electricity tariffs in the near future.

“A revision in electricity tariffs will have an effect on efforts to stimulate the economy,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Shaziman said the Cabinet had agreed to his ministry’s proposal for an earlier review of the price of gas to be conducted by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU).

He said EPU would be responsible for making recommendations and suggestions on the matter to the ministry before the issue was brought to the Cabinet.

He said if the EPU proposed a new price of gas, which would lead to a revision of electricity tariffs, his ministry would need three weeks to prepare the revised rates.

Shaziman said the Government was forced to review electricity tariffs last year due to the escalating prices of gas and coal.

On Monday, International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin called for electricity tariffs to be brought down in view of lower global fuel prices.
