©The Star (Used by permission) KUALA TERENGGANU: A relief fund with an initial injection of RM1mil has been set up to help fishermen whose livelihood is affected by bad weather, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. The fund would be coordinated by the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry.
Najib said this after meeting some 2,000 fishermen at the Malaysian Fisheries Authority Board (LKIM) base in Cendering here. Some 1,200 fishermen out of 6,000 in Terengganu are registered voters in the parliamentary by-election here today. On the by-election, Najib said it was Barisan Nasional, not the Opposition, which made big changes to the country. He also dismissed an allegation by PKR that mosques in Permatang Pauh had yet to receive maintenance aid promised during its by-election last August, adding the allocation had been approved and contractors were being hired. (See report on page 23). Najib urged voters to come out in droves and not be intimidated by any quarters. On the sudden resignation of the by-election returning officer Datuk Mat Razali Kassim, Najib said the former had made a principled stand. “It shows transparency,” he said. Later, Najib declared the renaming of the state teachers training institute at Bukit Rakit to the Datuk Razali Ismail Teachers Training Institute Campus and its adjoining SMK Bandar school to SMK Datuk Razali Ismail. Razali was the incumbent in the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary constituency. The by-election was called after he died of a heart attack last November. Set as favourite Share Email This Comments (0)
