KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 - Share prices on Bursa Malaysia were firmer at close today on follow through buying in selected heavyweights, particularly plantation stocks, dealers said.
The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) ended 26.30 points or 2.941 per cent higher at 920.66, the highest since the market went on a downtrend last year, pushed by gains mostly in IOI Corporation and Sime Darby. It opened 7.84 points higher at 901.84.
The Industrial Index went up 51.84 points to 2,140.63, the Finance Index surged 145.69 points to 7,070.90 and the Plantation Index jumped 352.29 points to 4,776.03.
The FBMEmas was 182.50 points higher at 6,039.88, the FBM30 rose 167.30 points to 5,931.19, the FBMMesdaq increased 142.62 points to 3,489.48 and the FBM2BRD surged 49.79 points to 4,081.92.
Gainers thumped losers by 530 to 119 while 131 counters were unchanged, 472 untraded and 27 others suspended.
Turnover surged to 845.963 million shares valued at RM1.019 billion from Friday's close of 507.412 million shares worth RM682.421 million.
Dealers said tension between Israel and Palestine has resulted in higher crude oil prices, which have also caused crude palm oil prices to shoot up. They said some investors saw this as an opportunity to buy plantation stocks and the trend is expected to continue until Chinese New Year.
Among top gainers, Tanjong gained 70 sen to RM14.20, IOI Corporation rose 48 sen to RM4.38 and Asiatic increased 46 sen to RM4.26.
Among actives, KNM added 4.5 sen to 48 sen, Ramunia Holdings edged up 3.5 sen to 34.5 sen and Malaysian Resources Corporation increased 6.5 sen to 81.5 sen.
As for heavyweights, Sime Darby rose 30 sen to RM5.70 while Tenaga Nasional and Bumiputra-Commerce added 15 sen each to RM6.40 and RM6.35 respectively.
Maybank increased 20 sen to RM5.40, MISC edged up five sen to RM8.65 while Public Bank eased 10 sen to RM8.80.
Volume on the Main Board surged to 707.178 million shares valued at RM991.427 million from Friday's close of 412.995 million shares worth RM667.128 million.
Turnover on the Second Board rose to 64.808 million units worth RM17.839 million from 35.026 million units valued at RM9.458 million previously.
Volume on the Mesdaq market improved to 18.125 million units valued at RM4.106 million from Friday's close of 9.427 million valued at RM1.936 million.
Warrants increased to 53.596 million shares worth RM5.406 million against the previous closing of 49.449 million shares valued at RM3.704 million.
On a sectoral basis, consumer products accounted for 12.589 million shares traded on the Main Board, industrial products 183.63 million, construction 69.304 million, trade/services 218.122 million, technology 4.108 million, infrastructure 17.171 million, finance 45.582 million, hotels 3.316 million, properties 97.992 million, plantations 54.006 million, mining 30,000, REITs 1.201 million and closed/fund 125,300.
