• 2 lawyers held over theft of court papers

ALOR STAR: Two lawyers from Butterworth were arrested for allegedly stealing three files containing investigation papers and trial notes related to a murder case at a High Court here.

The two men, aged 27 and 30, were arrested at about 9pm on Tuesday after they were called to assist police investigation into the incident at the Kota Setar police headquarters here.

Kota Setar Acting OCPD Deputy Supt Fiesal Libertus Abdullah said Deputy Public Prosecutor Murtazadi Amran, 46, noticed the files missing when he was about to mention the case at the High Court between 11am and 11.30am on Tuesday.

He said Murtazadi was at the High Court to mention the case of three men who were charged with a murder in Lunas, Kulim, last year. Murtazadi had placed the documents on a table in the courtroom.

“He suspected that the files were stolen and lodged a report at about 6.15pm the same day,” he said.

DSP Fiesal said based on the information, the two lawyers were called to the police station for questioning. Police then found the missing files with the two lawyers.

He said initial investigation showed that the two lawyers were at the courtroom although they were not involved in handling the murder case.

“We are investigating the motive for the theft,” he said.

DSP Fiesal said both men have been remanded for five days to facilitate investigation.

He said investigations were being conducted under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.
