KUALA LUMPUR, Tues: The Bar Council Chairman, Ambiga
Sreenevasan reiterated today the march for justice will go on as planned tomorrow
notwithstanding the report that the government has set up an independent panel
to determine the authenticity of the video recording.
"This falls short of the Bar's call for an investigation by a Royal Commission
not only of the recording but of larger issues affecting the state of the
administration of justice in Malaysia", said Ambiga.
In an immediate response to the composition of the panel, namely Tan Sri Haidar
Mohd Noor, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye and Datuk Mahadev Shankar, one senior lawyer
said the three personalities are not acceptable.
"Haidar was involved in the 1988 Judicial Crisis. Lee has no
legal training. Shankar served under Tun Eusoff Chin, and also in the Royal
Commission of Inquiry on the black-eye incident involving the former Deputy
Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim which only implicated the then
Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Rahim Noor, but took no action against police officers who were
present at the time the former IGP Ramli assaulted Anwar," he said.
Meanwhile, the walk tomorrow is a peaceful initiative and
everything humanly possible is being done to ensure this.
We call on all members to join us in the walk in solidarity, and to send a
serious message that improvements to the judicial system have been long overdue
including the establishment of an independent appointments and promotion
commission.

DEFINING MOMENT IS HERE written by Stephen Tan Ban Cheng,

I am coming to Kuala Lumpur and expect the march to proceed peacefully tomorrow without let or hindrance.
The lawyers who are going there are going there to march and then witness the memo calling for the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to be handed over to the Prime Minister or his representative.
Unfortunately, with the way the matters are being handled, the credibility of the Pak Lah administration now hangs in the balance.
The Pak Lah administration must redeem itself by ensuring that the march proceeds smoothly.
The Pak Lah administration will redeem itself if Pak Lah himself comes out personally to receive the memorandum from the representative of the lawyers.
In view of the coming general elections expected in the next few months, the "lesser lights" within the administration must no longer be allowed to handle matters since they have shown a complete incapability of doing so thus far.
Herein lies the defining moment of the new generation of lawyers. They must pass the test and pass it with flying colours. Malaysia expects them to do no less.

LOLLY GIVEN, NOT CHOCOLATE REQUESTED written by Stephen Tan Ban Cheng,

Fellow lawyers,
We lawyers asked for the chocolate of a Royal Commission of Inquiry. We have been given a lolly of an independent.
Never forget that. That is how our Government has decided to play it, thinking that it is dealing with children.
Let us ask them again for our chocolate. Let us not compromise for a lolly.

Making the march non-relevant? written by Lily Shazreena,

Quoting The Sun report - "Asked whether a special commission would be set up to investigate the case, he (Pak Lah) said: "There is no need for one."
