VK Lingam Tape©New Straits Times (Used by permission)

KUALA LUMPUR: Laboratory tests in Spain have proven that the voice on the so-called Lingam video clip matched that of lawyer Datuk V.K. Lingam.

Sources said that the finding came after two days of analysis at a private laboratory in Madrid last week.

"This technical finding will be tendered before the Royal Commission of Inquiry through a witness as early as tomorrow (today)," a source told the New Straits Times.

The NST last week reported that two Anti-Corruption Agency officials had left for the Spanish capital to verify if the voice on the clip was Lingam's.

The officers left on Jan 7 with a voice sample of the lawyer to be compared with the taped voice.

They returned home on Saturday and briefed the deputy public prosecutors who would be assisting the commission in the inquiry.

Deputy public prosecutors Datuk Nordin Hasan and Datuk Azmi Ariffin will be questioning witnesses for the commission.

Meanwhile, three politicians and three former chief justices are among the 16 witnesses who had been subpoenaed to give evidence.

They are former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Parti Keadilan Rakyat adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Tourism Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

The retired CJs are Tun Eusoff Chin, Tun Dzaiddin Abdullah and Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim.

Other witnesses are Lingam, tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan, lawyer R. Sivarasa, Parti Keadilan Rakyat co-ordinator Sim Tze Tzin, five witnesses from the ACA and and a representative from the cyber security agency, CyberSecurity Malaysia.

Sivarasa and Sim lodged a report at the ACA when the video clip was made public last September.

The commission was set up last month to investigate the video clip allegedly featuring Lingam brokering judicial appointments in a telephone conversation with a top judicial officer.

On Saturday, businessman Loh Mui Fah said the clip was taken by his son at Lingam's home in Kelana Jaya on Dec 20, 2001.

Loh, who confirmed he was there and had heard the conversation between Lingam and the unidentified caller, said he was ready to testify.

A Summary of the Costs Involved
written by Tan Peek Guat, Monday, January 14 2008 09:46 am

It will be good for the Malaysian public to know the sum involved for the above procedures - that is, in having the two members of the ACA going to the Spanish capital, and in having the voice tests done at the Spanish Lab.

Malaysians in power and authority ought to re-examine their own actions, decisions, capability or incapability, sensibility or their lacking of it, and their belief in God, or otherwise, and determine for themselves if there is any extravagance and misuse of power and authority in their actions and decisions.

For a local man, seen with a picture, and in action too, and with his individual voice and identity, as granted by God to each and every human being, and his availability to the authority, do we come to terms that such extravagant procedures are really necessary?

Moreover, we have thousands of prominent lawyers registered as members of the Bar, and yet, everyone seems so incapable, or their assistance not requested by the authority, in procuring the truth of the matter, and expediently too - to save Malaysians the costs and anxiety involved.

Furthermore, now that maker has been identified, can further costs be saved for the sake of the nation - so as not to unnecessarily cut off the economic cake but leave some for the marginalised citizens?
