Pursuant to the Legal Profession Act 1976, the name, with the date of admission, of every person admitted to the High Court of Malaya in Peninsular Malaysia is entered into a Roll of advocates and solicitors (“Roll”), which is kept by the Registrar of the High Court.
As the Roll had been misplaced when the Courts moved to Putrajaya, Bar Council initiated a project to reconstruct the Roll. After months of extensive compilation, we have produced a preliminary version of the Roll based on our records.
The Roll provides the date of admission of, and the details of disciplinary orders against (if any), an advocate and solicitor, and is updated from time to time. Based upon Bar Council’s records, the first person whose name was entered upon the Roll was the late H L Wrigglesworth, who had been admitted to the Malaysian Bar on 7 Oct 1948.

As at 16 June 2010, approximately 22,000 names of advocates and solicitors have been inscribed in the Roll. 1,121 advocates and solicitors’ names were added to the Roll in 2009, in comparison with a mere three in 1948.
A copy of the Bar Council’s Roll has been submitted to the Courts for review, and Bar Council is awaiting their feedback. Meanwhile, our copy of the Roll, placed at the Bar Council library, is available for inspection by Members of the Bar. The library is open every Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, except public holidays.
Members of the Bar who have any queries can contact Kwan Yin Cheng, Officer, Membership Department, by telephone at 03–2031 3003 ext 119 or by email at yc.kwan@malaysianbar.org.my.
