MALACCA, Mon.: A 31-year-old factory supervisor today lodged a police report over the "missing" lawyer he had engaged to look into his RM39,000 credit card debt five years ago.
The debt has ballooned to RM120,000 and Lin Kok Siong, failing to reach his lawyer after a two-week search, decided to lodge the report.
Lin, who works in Singapore, said he had retained lawyer Pok Yong Chan of YC Pok and Partners in 2000 to file a case against a credit company for fraud after his bills skyrocketed to over RM39,000.
Five years on, his bills have snowballed to more than RM120,000.
"When I came back last month and saw the latest statement from the bank which showed RM120,428.36, I was stunned.
"I contacted Pok but he told me not to worry. Later, I tried calling him again, but he did not answer my calls.
"I could not find him when I went to his office on Sept 27," Lin said.
Subsequently, Lin lodged a police report on Oct 10, alleging that Pok could not be found or contacted.
"I don’t understand what happened. I just want to know the status of my case," said Lin.
Lin held a Press conference with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng on Saturday, urging Pok to return his calls.
The New Straits Times managed to contact Pok today. He said he was sorry to have caused Lin and his family to worry over the case.
Pok said Lin’s case was previously handled by his partner before it was handed over to him.
He added that he shifted office recently and Lin’s files were misplaced.
"I only found his files a few days back and I will contact him to clarify the situation.
"His is a strong case and it should not be a problem," he said in a telephone interview.
"There was some miscommunication because I did not know they were frantically looking for me, even though I told them not to worry," said Pok.
Apologising to Lin, Pok said he would attend to his case immediately.
Meanwhile, Malacca Bar committee chairman Aloysius Ng said Lin could report to the committee any complaint he had about his lawyer.
"We have checked our records and they show that Pok holds a valid practising certificate."
