Renovations of Bar Council Premises PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 14 September 2010 10:53am

In order to create more working space and to provide a more conducive environment for Members of the Bar and pupils in chambers, Bar Council has decided to renovate its building.  This is our first major renovation since we moved into the building in 2003.

The renovations at the Bar Council building started on 24 May 2010 and are due for completion at the end of the year.  The renovations have advanced smoothly and I am pleased to inform Members of the Bar of the progress in the following areas:

Library

Renovation of the Bar Council library is complete.  We extended the library area and added many more bookshelves, allowing us to finally display all the reading materials that we have in proper order.  This will also enable our librarian, Dr Pathmavathy Satyamoorthy, to purchase more books as mandated by the Malaysian Bar at its 63rd Annual General Meeting in 2008.

The excellent view from the extended area of the library allows one to view the KL Tower, the Merdeka Square and other notable buildings around the Bar Council building.  Whilst undertaking the renovation, we also rectified the faulty gutter system, which had been a cause of water leakages in the library.

Ground Floor

Renovation of the Ground Floor is also complete.  Our frontline services - Membership, Admission and Complaints & Intervention Departments, and the Payment Counter - resumed operations on the ground floor on 20 Aug 2010 after having been housed temporarily at the auditorium for the past three months.  The Bar Council Bookshop has also reopened.

The ground floor renovation has expanded the number of work stations as well as created extra storage space for employees.  The partitioned work area allows the staff to work in a more conducive manner with minimal distraction.

As an added security measure, the glass door entrances to the ground floor, as well as to the lift and staircase to the upper floors, are now secured electronically and controlled by the security guard.

Mezzanine and 2nd Floors

Tiling works on the Mezzanine and 2nd Floors are complete.  This should eradicate the need to change carpets at regular intervals due to wear and tear as well as address the concern over the health hazards posed by worn carpets.  The Members’ Lounge has now been reopened for Members’ use.

Auditorium

Work to rectify the unevenness of the auditorium floor and to replace the seven-year-old carpet began earlier this week.  We hope to complete renovation by 30 Sept to enable the auditorium to be utilised again in October 2010.

Others

Other renovations to be undertaken include repainting internal areas, replacement of the tiles for the main staircase, replacement of sewerage pipes for the washrooms and repainting the external walls of the building.  We hope to complete these renovations by the end of the year.
