KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya police will be taking statements from Bar Council office bearers today over the “Walk for Justice” that took place in the administrative capital on Sept 26.

Vice-chairman Ragunath Kesavan said the police would be visiting the council office to record their statements.

“They called and said they wanted to take our statements with regard to the event of Sept 26.

“I gather this is following a report that was lodged by a police officer over the walk,” he said, adding that he, chairman Ambiga Sreenevasan and secretary Lim Chee Wee would be present at the 3.30pm meeting with their respective counsels.

On Sept 26, some 2,000 lawyers and activists had walked from the Palace of Justice to the Prime Minister’s Department to hand over two memoranda.

One called for a royal commission to verify the authenticity of the video clip showing a senior lawyer purportedly brokering the appointment of judges with a senior judge, and another for the establishment of a permanent judicial appointment commission for appointing judges.

A day before the walk, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that an independent panel of inquiry would be set up to verify the authenticity of the video clip that had been made public on Sept 19.

In a related matter, the Bar has called on the panel to recommend to the Government that a public inquiry be held under the Commission of Enquiry Act.

In a memorandum to the panel on Oct 12, Bar president Ambiga said the panel, given its lack of power, “will not provide the required answers or uncover the whole truth.”

The Bar’s memorandum said a Royal Commission of Inquiry was needed because the current panel seemed to be relying on probes by the police and ACA, and had no power to summon witnesses, get evidence on oath, issue arrest warrants or protect witnesses, among others.

Saying the video clip had “seared the very soul of Malaysia”, Ambiga said its “devastation must be addressed through appropriate processes that will be able to uncover the whole truth and recommend satisfactory remedies.”

The council has yet to hear from the panel whether it will grant an appointment for the Bar to “raise issues of relevance for the panel’s consideration.”

On Monday, the panel issued a statement announcing it would sit on Oct 29 at 10am at the Suhakam office in Jalan Raja Laut.

It said all persons who wish to provide any relevant material to verify the authenticity of the clip may attend the sitting in person and that they will have to furnish the panel secretariat with their names and identity card numbers in advance.
