SHAH ALAM: As the confusion cleared up on which lawyers were really representing the two policemen charged with the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu, another controversy erupted regarding Abdul Razak Baginda’s defence team.

Lawyer Shaun Tan Kee Shaan, who had appeared for C/Insp Azilah Hadri and Kpl Sirul Azhar Umar on Nov 15, discharged himself yesterday.

When the case was mentioned in the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Nov 23, four lawyers had challenged Tan’s position.

Lawyers Zulkifli Noordin and Juanita Johari had turned up to appear for C/Insp Azilah while Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin and Ahmad Zaidi Zainal, joined by Hasnal Rezua Merican yesterday, appeared for Kpl Sirul Azhar.

C/Insp Azilah managed to put on record that “I’d never appointed Mr Shaun.”

Tan insisted on submitting a representation to show that he had indeed been appointed.

He alleged that Zulkifli had tendered forged letters from the two policemen to the High Court.

“When I met them in prison, they said they didn’t write those letters. But today I’m sure they will say yes,” an enraged Tan said.

“If fake letters were tendered to the court, then the truth should be made known.”

Judicial Commissioner Mohd Zaki Md Yasin asked Tan not to involve the court into his misunderstanding with Zulkifli and said he would not touch on the issue.

“If that is the case, I will accept your decision. There is no more reason for me to be here,” Tan replied.

When Razak’s case was called up later, two new lawyers – Wong Kian Kheong and Low Thian Eng – were named as counsel.

After the abetment charge was read out to Razak, Mohd Zaki realised that his lawyers on record were Datuk Muhammad Shafee Abdullah and M. Puravalen.

At this juncture, Wong informed the court that he took over the case last week.

It is understood that Shafee and Puravalen have discharged themselves from the case.
