I would like to thank the many individuals, whom on behalf of the Malaysian Bar, played a crucial and supportive role when the rakyat of Malaysia exercised their rights to freedom of speech and assembly as enshrined under article 10 of the Federal Constitution, on 9 July 2011.
I was overwhelmed and most pleasantly surprised at the response Bar Council received when we invited Members of the Bar and pupils in chambers to come forward and join the monitoring team to observe the rally. Special gratitude goes to the Bar Council Human Rights Committee for spearheading this effort.
I was similarly encouraged at the large number of volunteers who signed up to be a part of the urgent arrest team, organised by the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur).
In addition to Members of the Bar and pupils in chambers, I also wish to thank staff members of the Bar Council Secretariat and Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) who played an important role in helping to put things together.
The Malaysian Bar pays tribute to all those who selflessly worked hard, sacrificed their time, roughed it out on the night before the rally, braved tear gas and water cannons, and turned up at places where arrested persons were held. Their commitment helped provide a useful account of the incidents that transpired on 9 July 2011 and was a source of reassurance for all those arrested.
