KUALA LUMPUR: Why do lawyers want to get elected to the Bar Council?

Are there perks or privileges that come with the position or are they truly there to work for the good of the profession?

Former Bar president Datuk Dr Cyrus Das said lawyers were drawn to being elected to the Bar Council because it was a highly regarded position.

"The main reason is to serve the profession and the objectives that the Bar stands for, which is justice and civil liberties.

"The Bar is often the best body to protect these objectives because it speaks for public interest," Das said.

"Office-bearers are not paid. They are performing a service to fellow lawyers."

The lawyers who had forged the ballot papers were an "utter disgrace to the profession", said lawyer Fahri Azzat.

"Why they committed the forgery, I don’t know. Clearly, there are desperate people who are willing to stoop to anything to win.

"People fighting for their survival would resort to any means for self-preservation," he added.

Fifty ballot papers for the 2007-2008 elections were forged.

Fahri said he did not know why anyone would want to join or stay on in the Bar Council.

"I’m unaware of any perk or privilege of sitting in the council. It’s very time-consuming, there’s possibly even the risk of loss of income, so I don’t know what the big deal is about being a council member."

Lawyer Karpal Singh said those who had filed the forged ballot papers were clearly determined to get elected.

"However, it’s clear that they had an oblique motive for being elected by doing what they did (forging the ballots). The police should get to the bottom of this."
