ImageKUALA LUMPUR, Mon: The new rules governing websites of law firms will come into effect on 1 September 2005. These rules will supersede "BCR 02/2002 - Website Rules for Law Firms” which came into force on  1 May 2002. The 2005 rules require, inter alia, an advocate and solicitor to report the address of his website to the Bar Council within 1 month after the publication of the website on the Internet, or by 1 October 2005, whichever is the later, and thereafter any change to the website address within 1 month after the date of such change.

In a separate development, the Bar Council unanimously decided in its meeting on Saturday to permit advertisements on this website by law firms. Currently, only advertisements for job openings are permitted. More details can be obtained from this page.

When approached, the Malaysian Bar Webmaster said it makes good business sense for law firms to advertise on this website as since its revamp on May 14, this  website has generated a huge amount of traffic and hits. He said: "Our old site received a total of 200,000 hits from the date of its first launch in 1998 till 25 March 2003. But the present site has received more than 800,000 hits from 14 May 2005, the date the website was revamped." He added that our website is getting an average of 6,000-12,000 hits every weekday and about 2,000-3,000 hits during the weekend. The total number of hits since 25 March 2003 has now exceeded one million!

The Malaysian Bar Webmaster thanks all members and visitors for the support, and he hopes more members will sign up as this can help the Bar save a lot of costs as it would cost the Malaysian Bar about RM6,000 each time if, for exampe, a one page letter is sent to all our 12,000 members when the same document can be downloaded from this website and printed in its original form similar to the hard copy.
