Pakistani lawyers arrestedHis Excellency Tahir Mahmud Qazi
High Commissioner
High Commission of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan
No. 132, Jalan Ampang
50450 Kuala Lumpur

Your Excellency

I write as the President of the Malaysian Bar.

The rule of law is under siege in Pakistan.

The world community is watching in horror the arrests and ill-treatment of judges, lawyers, activists and opposition figures and the gross human rights violations that are taking place in Pakistan. The shocking attack on the institution of the judiciary and the legal profession which are cornerstones of the rule of law, must cease. Violence against those who seek to uphold the rule of law is violence against the rule of law itself.

The Malaysian Bar is in complete solidarity with its colleagues the lawyers, the judges and all those who have endeavoured and continue to endeavour to protect and preserve human rights and the rule of law in Pakistan.

The rule of law should never be sacrificed or compromised for political power.

The Malaysian Bar fully supports the calls for the immediate reinstatement of the Constitution, the Chief Justice and the rule of law in Pakistan. We further support the call for the immediate release of all those under detention and for an end to the senseless violence against the people of Pakistan.

Ambiga Sreenevasan
President
Malaysian Bar

President's Pak Statement
written by Haji Sulaiman Abdullah, Wednesday, November 07 2007 05:57 pm

I congratulate Ambiga on an excellent statement. I particularly like that line, "The rule of law should never be sacrificed or compromised for political power". Exactly! As the Canadian Bar Association statement, which is up on our Website, says, we as lawyers cannot keep quiet when lawyers and judges anywhere in the world are being treated with such vicious coldheartedness.

I am proud that the Malaysian Bar has joined in with the IBA, CLA and CBA in delivering a clear condemnation of executive lawlessness in Pakistan as well as a stirring call of support for Chief Justice Chaudhary and our lawyer colleagues.

Well done, Bar Council and Ambi!

More Pak Lawyers Detained
written by Haji Sulaiman Abdullah, Wednesday, November 07 2007 07:14 pm

I have just heard Nadim Baba of Al Jazeera say that 3,500 Pakistani lawyers are behind bars now! If Musharaff is going to carry on like this he will have no lawyers left to defend him when he faces trial, as he inevitably must, on charges of high treason as all the potential defence counsel would be disqualified by conflict of interest. Of course, there are always his tame lawyers but if they are not in the dock with him they would swiftly have distanced themselves from him. That type always do!

Power and Greed
written by Tan Peek Guat, Friday, November 09 2007 02:45 am

The greed for power, and the greed for greed itself spell trouble and nothing but troubles.

Well done, Ms Ambiga, to be showing your humanity in sharing another's pains and sufferings.

Tan Peek Guat
