KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- The Bar Council today urged the government to sign the statute for the International Criminal Court (ICC), or the Rome Statute, to reflect Malaysia's long and time-honoured commitment to the cause of international humanitarian law and peace-keeping.

Its president, Ambiga Sreenevasan, said ratifying the statute was in Malaysia's continuing interest as a responsible member of the international community to be part of the worldwide initiative towards ending impunity of aggressors in conflict-ridden areas and obtaining justice for victims of some of the gravest crimes against humanity.

She said that since independence Malaysia had contributed peace-keeping troops in many war-torn and conflict ridden areas such as the Congo, Angola, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Burundi, Cambodia, Somalia and Western Sahara as well as ratified conventions such as Geneva Convention and recently the Chemical Weapons Convention.

"Despite our obvious commitment to international justice and the rule of law in the international area, Malaysia has yet to ratify the Rome Statute," she said in a statement.

She said the ICC is the first permanent international court before which those who have perpetrated some of the most heinous crimes possible by one human being against another would be brought to justice.

Ambiga said the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) and other professional organisations have all expressed keen interest in Malaysia's membership of the ICC, and that the Bar Council was ready to assist the government in any way in this regard.
