KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 (Bernama) -- A large Malaysian delegation comprising barristers of the Inner Temple is expected to visit London in June, in conjunction with the 400th anniversary celebrations of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple.

Court of Appeal Judge Datuk James Foong Cheng Yuen will head the delegation.

Malaysian Inner Temple Alumni Association secretary, S. Radhakrishnan said this year's celebrations committee under the chairmanship of Lord Justice May, had drawn up an elaborate programme to celebrate the anniversary.

He said the highlight of the celebrations would be the attendance of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburg on June 24.

"They will be attending a service of thanksgiving in the Temple Church to mark the quarter centenary.

An important part of the celebrations will be the production of a full colour illustrated volume offering a rich panaroma of life, law and learning in the Inn over six centuries and more.

"Throughout the celebrations, there will be many events including debates, lectures, music, opera, theatre, open days as well as the black-tie dinner and dance," Radhakrishnan told Bernama Saturday.

The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple is one of the four Inns of Court around the Royal Courts of Justice in London which may call members to the Bar to entitle them to practise as barristers.

The other Inns are Middle Temple, Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn.

More than 9,000 barristers worldwide have been called to the English Bar from the Inner Temple. They are practising law or residing not only in the United Kingdom but also all over the world, especially in the Commonwealth.

Meanwhile, Radhakrishnan said Malaysia had the distinction of being the first country in the Commonwealth to have established an alumni for the barristers of the Inner temple.

He said the alumni was established in September 2006. Its first president was the late Tan Sri Abdul Malek Ahmad, the then court of appeal president.

The number of Malaysian luminaries who have been called to the English Bar from the Inner Temple could easily fill an encyclopaedia.

Among them are the country's first Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Muhammad, the first prime minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Malaysia's first lord president, Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah and Tun Azmi Mohammad, the country's second lord president.

Other internationally-renowned figures include Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mohamad Ali Jinnah of Pakistan and former prime minister of Britain Clement Atlee.

Radhakrishnan said local Inner Temple barristers who wished to participate in the celebration or obtain further information can contact the alumni at tel: 03-20709545.

Holidaying together... Judges and lawyers?? ....mmmmm

Lawyers and judges going for holiday...or together in an associations.

When a lawyer member Malaysian Inner Temple Alumni Association appear before a sitting judge member - would the judge recuse himself? I wonder whether there would be fairness and justice to the other party represented by some CLP lawyer or local university graduate lawyer...

A delegation is it? Judges and lawyers....mmmmm

In solidarity,

Charles Hector

Appearances and realities

It is perhaps a sad reflection of the state of our Judicial system that such a comment can be made, and can be viewed seriously as a matter of concern by most of us.

However, I disagree that there is anything sinister in this. Lawyers and Judges who go on an officially sanctioned, openly declared "delegation" to an official Legal event is as far removed from the notion of a lawyer and a judge "holidaying together" as is possible.

What if in an era to come, a judge and a lawyer go as part of a delegation to an International Conference on Legal Aid, or on Migrant Rights? Would that be permissible? And would a local grad Judge be biased against a foreign grad lawyer? Would a Judge and a lawyer who have both served on a committee organising a conference or an event be considered as having too close of a relationship with each other? What about a Judge who was in the same university as a lawyer?

Whilst we all hope that Judges do not look on lawyers purely from the rose tinted glasses of who are their friends and who are not, I think the reality is that human nature dictates that you exhibit a certain laxity to persons you are familiar with. Hence, the complaint of many junior lawyers that senior lawyers are treated better by the Bench!

On a more serious note, however: Jinnah was from Lincoln's Inn!!! smilies/wink.gif
