KUALA LUMPUR: The brother of lawyer Datuk V.K. Lingam has lodged a police
report re-affirming that he was forced to pretend to be mentally unstable.
V. Thirunama Karasu, who lodged the report with the Brickfields police
yesterday, said he was also forced to visit several psychiatrists.
Karasu said he was told that he would be summoned by the ACA for a statement,
following a report lodged against his brother, several senior judges and a
former Inspector-General of Police.
He named the person who gave him these instructions in his police report and
claimed that the person threatened him with harm if he did not retract his
statement given to the ACA.
Karasu had given a statement to the ACA in 1998 where he claimed he told them
the truth, including being told to pretend to be mentally unstable.
Karasu also claimed he was told to get himself admitted to a psychiatric ward.
He said he gave in to the threats and went to see another doctor in Petaling
Jaya Old Town, pretending to be suffering from depression.
“The doctor gave me some medication but I did not take them and instead gave the
pills to a lawyer for safekeeping.
“This went on for quite some time and when I was quizzed again by the ACA, I
told them I lied when giving them my first statement,” he said.
Karasu said he had to visit several other psychiatrists and put up an act just
to get admitted but one of them even discharged him saying he was normal.
He added that he decided to stop pretending about his health and come clean once
and for all about his real state of mind.
Two weeks ago, lawyer and former Bukit Bintang MP Wee Choo Keong held a press
conference and made various allegations against Lingam quoting two reports by
Karasu.
However, two days later Lingam issued a press statement stating that Karasu was
mentally unstable.
Lingam also produced several medical reports that backed his claims.
Wee, who accompanied Karasu to lodge his report yesterday, reiterated that he
would be seeking explanations as to how Lingam got the reports and would even
complain to the Malaysian Medical Association about the matter as it breached
patient-doctor confidentiality.
Wee also questioned why a former Attorney-General who was implicated in Karasu’s
statement to the ACA was allowed to make decisions on the investigations.
He said there should have been an independent body or somebody not implicated,
to investigate the report then.
