PENANG: An 80-year-old grandmother was looking forward to a 'windfall’ of more than RM560,000 after selling a piece of land in Butterworth.

Instead she was cheated by her “crooked” lawyer.

The grandmother is still waiting for the money after more than 12 years while the lawyer, now 45, has fled the country.

The lawyer, who has been on the run the past six years, had failed to hand over the money to the grandmother after the land sale in 1993.

It is learnt that the lawyer had used the money to build a house on the mainland.

He is believed to have recently fled to a neighbouring country. The immigration department has been directed to look out for him should he return to the country.

It is also learnt that the lawyer, who was introduced to the victim by a good friend, had altered the cheque made under her name and deposited it into an accomplice’s account before withdrawing the cash.

Meanwhile, police are looking for Leong Sin Cheong of 81, Jalan Taman Bukit, Taman Bukit, in Bukit Mertajam to assist them.

Those who know his whereabouts or have seen him are urged to call Chief Insp Jasmani Sarbini (04-2221522 ext 1590), or any police station.
