KUALA LUMPUR: The lawyer at the centre of a video clip controversy allegedly showing him in a telephone discussion over the appointment of judges, has been out of the country for the last month, according to his legal firm. An employee of the firm here said yesterday Datuk V.K. Lingam was expected to return home at the end of the week or early next month. The employee said the lawyer occasionally called the office. Calls to Lingam since Wednesday, when the video clip was released to the media, through his mobile phone went unanswered. The footage, in which Lingam appeared to be speaking to a senior judge, is said to have been recorded in 2002. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said on Friday that he viewed the video seriously and had asked the police to investigate it. Police said the lawyer would be interviewed to determine the authenticity of the clip. The Bar Council on Saturday decided to refer him to the legal profession's disciplinary board. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Nazri Aziz said on Sunday that a senior judge had contacted him to deny that he was on the other end of the telephone conversation with the lawyer. The judge has so far offered no official response. An aide said he would clarify the matter at an appropriate time. Set as favourite Share Email This Comments (0)
