KUALA LUMPUR: A 39-year-old lawyer was arrested on
Sunday by police for sending a threatening message via SMS (Short Messaging
Services) to a woman he had known for only 17 days.
Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Zulhasnan
Najib Baharudin confirmed the arrest.
The suspect was remanded for two days and released on bail
yesterday.
He was detained after the 25-year-old victim, who worked as a
promote in the city, lodged a police report against him at the Brickfields
station on May 25.
The victim alleged that the suspect had sent threatening
SMSes to her after she refused to meet him for the third time.
In the SMSes, the suspect allegedly told her that he would
humiliate her in public if she declined to meet or continue seeing her.
The two got to know each other at the Mid Valley Megamall on
May 13 when both went shopping there.
They met again for the second time two days later and that
was when they exchanged phone numbers.
Since then, they have been texting each other frequently.
He started to send her threatening SMSes when she refused to
meet him again.
Police are investigating the case under Section 507 of the
Criminal Penal Code for criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication.
It carries a maximum jail term of two years upon conviction.
