KUALA LUMPUR: A lawyer claimed trial in the Sessions Court here to five counts
of criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM13,500.
Kharida Ramli, 44, from Ipoh, is alleged to have committed the offence with cash
belonging to a law firm between April 4, 2000 and April 14, 2005.
She allegedly took between RM500 and RM5,000 on each of the five occasions while
she was a partner of the firm at The Amp Walk in Jalan Ampang here.
If convicted, she faces a jail term of up to 20 years, whipping and a fine for
each charge under Section 409 of the Penal Code.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Harris Ong Mohd Jeffery Ong asked the court to set her
bail at RM5,000 in one surety.
Pleading for lower bail yesterday, Kharida said she did not have enough money to
post bail.
“I am a lawyer but I am not working now. I will defend my own case. I just want
a hearing date,” she said.
She said she would not abscond and planned to answer her charges.
“My passport went missing in October last year and its number has been
blacklisted by the Immigration Department. I have lodged a police report over
this,” she said, adding that her bailor was present in court.
“I cannot go anywhere,” she said with a smile.
Sessions Court judge S.M. Komathy Suppiah set bail at RM5,000 in one surety.
However, the judge allowed Kharida to post partial security of RM3,000 for her
release.
Justice Komathy set three days from Jan 12 next year for trial.
