MALACCA: On 21 July 2007, the Multimedia University School of Law
organised a Law Awareness Day for their law students with the assistance of the
Malacca Young Lawyers and Chambering Pupils Sub-Committee. Five prominent
members of the Malacca Bar were invited to speak on their lives as lawyers in
their respective fields of practice.
The 2nd to 4th year students were already anticipating an interesting talk from
our panel of speakers for the day and Wong Fook Meng started the talk by giving
an overview of the transition process from law school to legal practice. He also
spoke on how young practitioners can navigate through the challenging first
years of practice. Next up was Chee Kong Chi who spoke about life as a corporate
lawyer. With his vast experience in handling many complex commercial
transactions, he astounded even the lawyers in attendance about what corporate
legal practice entails. Phrases like Reverse Take Over (RTO) and Mergers and
Acquisition (M&A) were explained in easy to understand terms and illustrated
with current examples. Chee also advised the students that beyond the conundrum
of legal terms, “soft skills” were as equally important for a lawyer.
J. Amardas was the next speaker. He told the audience that he came without a
powerpoint presentation and made a lasting impression on the students that a
criminal lawyer needs to have the law at his or her fingertips and ought to be
well versed with the facts of the case at hand. Nitin K. Gordhan spoke about
life as a conveyancing lawyer and gave an overview of conveyancing practice. He
also touched on the No Discount Rule and urged the future lawyers against
unhealthy undercutting of fees which is incompatible with the noble profession
of the law. Fatima Tahir was the final speaker and gave an insightful talk on
civil litigation. She also said that lawyers have the privilege of living
“vicariously” in the many different lives of the clients whom as we serve.
After a short tea break, the students had the opportunity to come “up close and
personal” with the speakers and ask questions about legal practice. The students
were divided into smaller groups and moved from one station to another to meet
with the five speakers. The other lawyers in attendance assisted the speakers
and gave explanation and insights about the legal profession.
Overall, it was a fruitful event as the students gained valuable insight into
the practical aspects of legal practice and were given an overview of the major
areas of practice. With a clearer vision of what legal practice entails, the
students will have a more meaningful journey in law school.
The Law Awareness day that began at 9.00 am ended at 2.00 pm
to a resounding success.
