KUALA LUMPUR, Thurs: About 300 mostly young lawyers turned up tonight to do their bit for charity in the Charity Night organised by the Young Lawyers Committee of the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee at the Souled Out Cafe at Sri Hartamas. (Please click here to view the picture gallery.)

A sum of of RM7,000 was pledged and/or collected from the items that were auctioned and bids that were made for some lawyers including our office bearers to sing or dance in aid of the Stepping Stones Home at Taman Seputeh, Kuala Lumpur. Members who turned up were also given free shavers as door gifts and entertained to songs and dances, and also by an all-young-lawyers band comprising singer Mark Ho, drummer Chua, and guitarists Colin and Izral.

The highlight of the evening was no doubt the office bearers stepping forward to sing their hearts out for RM1,500, which was the highest bid made by Messrs Ranjit Ooi & Robert Low albeit everyone wondered why they had chosen to sing "Killing Me Softly", adverting to the many challenges that are currently being faced by the office bearers. But the President of the Malaysian Bar, Yeo Yang Poh sang with such gusto and passion that many in the crowd joined in and applauded them for doing a good cause for charity.

Apart from the office bearers, lawyer Fahri Azzat also sang for RM325 while a group of lawyers from the firm Shook Lin & Bok sang the love song, "Nothing gonna change my love for you" for RM520. The young adults from the Home sang " I Will Celebrate" while dancers from the Shall We Dance Studio entertained the crowd with a modern dance.

The founder of the Steeping Stones Home, Pastor Johnson, who was also present with some children from the Home, said the Home was founded in 1997 to serve the needs of children who have suffered from neglect, abuse and abandonment or children whose families are experiencing family crises like the death of parent(s), divorce, violence, homelessness, parental school or drug abuse and other issues which threaten family stability. Pastor Johnson said some of the children served have been victims of sexual, physical or emotional abuse or physical neglect and abandonment. He said at present there are about 100 occupants consisting of mainly young girls, young boys below age 11 and mothers. When approached, Pastor Johnson thanked the Young Lawyers Committee for organising this event to raise funds for the Home.

As a whole, the event was extremely well organised, and our young lawyers should be credited for sparing a thought for the unfortunate and which virtue is now often a thing of the past in this present generation. In the same event, everyone could also see the display of esprit de corps at its best among our young lawyers.

The urbane Chairman of the Young Lawyers Committee, Richard Wee said he was rather surprised by the huge turnout and said once the accounts have been audited, the balance would be forwarded to the Home.

Also present were the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee Chairman, Lim Chee Wee and Bar Councillor, Roger Tan.
