A young lawyer conducting a workshopKUALA LUMPUR, Sun: A project initiated by the YLC 2005/06 and carried on by the current YLC of KL Bar, sees a group of volunteer lawyers visiting the Law Faculties of Universities around Klang Valley to meet LL.B undergraduates.

In January 2006, YLC organised a half-day workshop at Universiti Malaya, meeting final year law students. The workshop was very well received and the YLC was again invited to conduct a similar workshop at UM on July 22, 2006. Again, the feedback from the students art UM was positive, and the workshop looks set to be a permanent feature in the UM’s diary.

In view of the success of this project, the YLC then decided to conduct these workshops at other Universities around Selangor, and after consulting Selangor Bar Committee’s Chairman, George Varughese; the KL YLC, crossed the border to visit University Kebangsaan Malaysia at Bangi on August 5, 2006. At UKM, not only were YLC members at the workshop, the Chairman of the Pupils Welfare of KL Bar, Abdul Rashid Ismail was also present to take part in the workshop.

The UKM students were an enthusiastic lot and were very bright. They posed many questions and the volunteer lawyers were more than pleased to provide an insight into their daily working life.

This term, this project is led by Lai Chee Hoe, Co-Chair of the Career Advancement sub-Committee of YLC. Under his leadership, a group of 15 lawyers have volunteered to go visit the Universities in Klang Valley for the said workshop.

During the workshop, the undergraduates are divided into small groups of 8 to 15 students per group, and these volunteer lawyers will have an informal discussion with the students on the realities of legal practise. As in the pilot project on January 22, 2006 at UM, the aim of the workshop remains unchanged - to assist these students to manage their expectations of practise, so as to better prepare them when they join the Bar.

The YLC hope with these workshops, the YLC will contribute towards the improvement of the quality of the in-coming younger lawyers.

The next workshop is on August 19, 2006 at University Islam Antarabangsa. UiTM’s law faculty has also invited YLC to conduct the workshop, with the date yet to be fixed.

I must congratulate the YLC on this excellent initiative! This is the kind of service we need to provide our next generation. It will also be useful for local Law faculties when they re-look their courses.

I would be quite happy to volunteer my services in any way possible to help in this programme.
