Johore Bahru lawyer charged with 20 counts of fraud PDF Print E-mail

Johor Bahru, Tues: A 50-year old lawyer was charged in the magistrate’s court today with 20 counts of falsely certifying progress of construction work in a housing project in Benut near Pontian.

Tam Chen Kong was alleged to have committed the offence to fraudulently receive RM2,162,158 in bridging finance from Maybank Finance Bhd, Jalan Segget branch here, between Oct 7, 1997, and Nov 2, 2000.

The charge stated that Tam falsely certified the completion of works on 20 separate lots in the project to deceive the finance company into releasing the progress payments and that he billed the finance company for sums ranging from RM91,214 to RM207,184 over a three-year period.

Tam who was represented by counsel T.Selvam, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Chief Inspector David Chung prosecuted.

Magistrate Nu’Aman Mahmud Zuhudi fixed hearing on Oct 12 and 13.
