Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz ALOR STAR: A group of lawyers has obtained enough signatures to hold an emergency general meeting (EGM) today to adopt a resolution to call on the Government to reinstate the judicial review in the amended Legal Profession Act.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz said the lawyers, who had collected enough signatures to call for the meeting, were welcome to submit their resolution. The meeting will be held in Kuala Lumpur.

However, Nazri said, the Government would not postpone enforcement of the Legal Profession Act 1976 (Amendment) Act 2006.

“We have made the amendment based on the recommendation of the Bar Council. But some lawyers do not agree because they feel that the judicial review should be in place to ensure justice,” he said.

“But we have enough avenues to ensure justice as we can make appeals through the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court.”

Nazri said this after attending a dinner on Wednesday night to commemorate the 10th year of Amanahraya Bhd’s corporatisation.

“If the group of lawyers adopts any resolution during the EGM, we will review it during the subsequent Parliament sessions,” he added.

“But for the time being the amended Act stays because we do not want to deprive young lawyers from contesting for posts,” he said.
