PETALING JAYA (Aug 12, 2008) : The Malay Students Front (GPMS) yesterday claimed that it had written and faxed a letter to the Bar Council a day before the controversial forum to ask for a meeting to discuss the possible repercussions from the forum.

In a media statement, GPMS secretary Mohamed Shamir Abdul Aziz said his party was interested in meeting the Bar Council to inform that the forum might have adverse effects but was ignored by the council.

"We were willing to meet them (Bar Council) at 2.30pm after Friday prayers to duly inform that if the forum goes ahead, it might stoke religious and racial sentiments," said Mohamed Shamir.

"The forum was simply not the best solution or the right medium to address the problems.

He said GPMS informed the media about a peaceful demonstration because it was disappointed with the Bar Council's stand.

He added that a street demonstration was not GPMS's first option but the organisers of the forum did not listen to advice and requests from various parties to call off the forum.
