JOHOR BARU: A fugitive lawyer couple have been arrested for allegedly committing
criminal breach of trust involving the sale of property and accident claims
worth millions of ringgit in the state.
A Bukit Aman Commercial Crimes unit officers picked up the husband and wife, in
their 40s, in Kuala Lumpur several days ago.
The couple, who are related to a prominent politician, were later handed over to
Johor police for investigations.
It is learnt that the duo, who have been barred from practising, have been on
the run from the police for several years after many police reports were lodged
alleging CBT against them since the 1990s.
Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaakob confirmed the arrest and said
investigations were on-going.
Sources said the couple were involved in more than a dozen cases, mainly in
Johor.
In one case in 1999, the couple handled a RM2.5mil land transaction.
Sources said brothers from a family had hired the couple to assist in the sale
of a 4ha plot in Tanjung Kupang.
“However, one of the brothers lodged a report when the couple only handed over a
portion of the money paid for the deal,” the source said, adding that in
accident claims, the couple allegedly withheld payments made by insurance
companies to victims.
The source also said that the couple were among 25 lawyers nationwide who were
sought by police in connection with 217 CBT cases last year.
