Mdm Lim Bee Vian explaining about SSCDF to the participants

The programme which took place on 13th July 2009 at the Bar Council Auditorium  commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Lim Chee Wee, Vice President of the Malaysian Bar and Chairman of the Practice Management Support Committee.  He welcomed Madam Lim Bee Vian, Senior Deputy Director of Business and Other Services Division, Puan Azrina Bt. Hashim, Senior Assistant Director of Foreign Investment Promotion Division from Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (“MIDA”) and the 40 members of the Bar who attended the talk.

Madam Lim Bee Vian briefed the participants about the financial assistance available to the members of the Bar under the SSCDF. She explained that the SSCDF was established to reduce the impact of liberalisation by building the capacity of Malaysian service providers with the requisite skill, knowledge, attitude and aptitude for international competitiveness. A cabinet decision made on 14th November 2008, established SSCDF  with an initial allocation of RM 100 Million.

Madam Lim Bee Vian explained that members of the Bar may be able to procure  financial assistance either in the form of a grant or soft loan and explained that the applications may be submitted under the following four Qualifying Capacity Development Programmes i.e:- Training/Outreach; Accreditation; Mergers and Acquisitions and Upgrading and Modernisation.

In light of the prospect of increased competition upon liberalisation Madam Lim Bee Vian encouraged members of the Bar practising as sole proprietors or in small partnerships to examine the possibility of mergers. Transaction costs of up to a maximum of RM250,000.00 can be obtained from SSCDF subject to the terms and conditions involved therein.

The talk was followed by a question and answer session where members of the Bar clarified their doubts in respect of the SSCDF.

Mr. Lim Chee Wee concluded the evening’s programme by thanking Madam Lim Bee Vian and Puan Azrina Bt. Hashim for their time and effort and presented them with a token of appreciation.
