PUTRAJAYA, June 29 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi says what has been implemented by the government since the nation's independence 50 years ago is based on the social contract under the Federal Constitution.

Disagreeing with the hosting of a forum on social contract by the Bar Council today, he said discussions on the social contract might lead to feelings of animosity and give rise to tension.

"I think there is no need to hold the forum. No need to discuss this matter. Discussions will lead to all sorts of reactions from the Malays and when such things happen, then something untoward may happen and may fuel feelings of enmity and lead to a situation which we may not like it. It can create tension (in the country).

"What we lose if we don't discuss this matter. No need to discuss this matter and the Malays don't like this issue to be discussed," he told reporters after launching the "Putrajaya Residents Green Earth Programme With The Prime Minister" here Sunday.

The forum panellists are political scientists Dr Farish Noor and Dr Kua Kia Soong, constitutional lawyer Tommy Thomas and UKM political science lecturer Dr Marvis Puthucheary.

Abdullah said all Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties understood the social contract as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

"The social contract has been agreed upon. We understand what the social contract is all about. What we have implemented over the last 50 years is based on what is provided for in the social contract.

"Our country has become a peaceful, stable and a prosperous nation and is still scaling greater heights and scoring successes because there are no groups which politicised this issue.

"I know the government is responsible. Our government is made of representatives of BN component parties.

"Though the BN started with only three component parties, it has been expanded with 14 components which always advised and conferred with one another on whatever issue discussed and decided upon," he added.
