KUALA LUMPUR, Tues: "A New Age for Women and Girls" will be the theme of the 32nd International Convention of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (Fida), to be held here on Nov 7.

Women lawyers from all over the world will gather to discuss such issues of women's concern as the trafficking of women and girls, global health challenges affecting women, violence against women, and infant mortality.

Fida president Puan Sri N. Saraswathy Devi said the convention would address equal rights for all women who have been the subject of "continual and unabated oppression, manipulation and discrimination".

"The common destiny of humanity lies in the realisation that women's rights are human rights in this new age for women and girls," she said. "These rights are life, liberty, health, security in family life, empowerment and the pursuit of happiness."

So far, women lawyers from 20 countries have confirmed their participation in the five-day convention. More are expected.

The convention will be declared open by Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah.

Fida is an international non-governmental organisation with consultative status to the economic and social council of the United Nations.

Its mission is to promote the welfare of women and children and the aims of the UN in their legal and social welfare.
