KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Commission of Inquiry into the controversial Lingam
video clip will try to meet the March 11 deadline to present its report to the
Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Commission secretary Datuk Abdullah Sani Abd Hamid said an
extension would be sought only if the situation warranted.
He was commenting on the extension of the deadline set by the commission for
lawyers to present their submissions.
Initially, the lawyers were supposed to have handed in their written submissions
yesterday.
They have now been given until tomorrow to do so.
Abdullah Sani said the extension was to allow the parties
more time to prepare their submissions.
The lawyers had also given a written undertaking to the commission that they
would not release copies of their submissions to third parties, including their
clients.
A lawyer, who was appearing for one of the witnesses, said the prohibition was
to prevent a trial by media.
"I think it is not fair to reveal the contents of submissions due to some
sensitive issues."
The commission was set up to investigate the controversial video clip allegedly
showing lawyer Datuk V.K. Lingam brokering judicial appointments with former
chief justice Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim over the telephone.
Members of the commission, comprising chairman Tan Sri Haidar Mohamed Noor, Tan
Sri Steve Shim Lip Kiong, Datuk Mahadev Shankar, Puan Sri Zaitun Zawiyah Puteh
and Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Khoo Kay Kim, conducted the inquiry for 17 days
from Jan 14.
The proceedings ended on Feb 15 with 21 witnesses being called.
