SEVERAL women MPs will set up a women’s caucus to look into the common problems
faced by Malaysian women.
Chong Eng (DAP – Bukit Mertajam), who was a member in the gender equality caucus
in the previous Parliament, said they had met twice but lamented that none of
the Barisan Nasional women MPs turned up for the meetings.
“This is not about race or party, this is about standing up for women’s rights,”
she said.
She said they had decided to fight for the amendment of Section 95 of the
Maintenance Act to ensure divorced mothers get compensation from their former
husbands.
Another issue they would focus on is childcare facilities at the workplace.
“I will lead the team on the amendment of Section 95, while Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR
– Lembah Pantai) will lead the team on childcare facilities. We will invite
lawyers from the Bar Council and Syariah lawyers to brief us on the Act,” Chong
said at the Parliament lobby.
She said she would hold another meeting today to discuss the caucus.
