The fifth and final keynote address at the 5th China-ASEAN  Forum on Legal Cooperation and Development (“CAFTA”) was delivered by YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Yong Poh Kon who shared his two cents with the audience, accompanied by peals of laughter, to conclude the two-day forum on 27 Sept 2011.

YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Yong Poh Kon – who is Co-Chairman of PEMUDAH, whose tagline is “The Special Taskforce to Facilitate Business” – spoke convincingly on why legal services should be liberalised.  He questioned why Malaysia was taking more time to liberalise in comparison to many other countries, and provided a brief illustration, using the manufacturing industry in Malaysia.

The speaker, who is also Managing Director of Royal Selangor International Sdn Bhd, expressed his belief that liberalisation of the legal industry would grant opportunities to young lawyers, who should adopt a long-term plan.  He stated that the future for the legal industry in Malaysia would be bright, where lawyers could form partnerships with foreign firms, and successfully resolve cases with information and knowledge sourced from different parts of the world.  He noted that Malaysian lawyers would also benefit from the equal opportunity to venture abroad, and to share and expand their expertise.

According to YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Yong Poh Kon, Malaysia must take a braver front where liberalisation of legal services was concerned.  He highlighted that, with the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area, there was a huge potential for trade to expand, and with such expansion, more legal services would be required.  He ended his speech by saying that liberalisation would further facilitate the conduct of business, which would be of benefit to all, particularly those who are best prepared to compete.
