Malaysia started Day 3 by leading 5.5 to 3.5. Cross country proved to be too difficult for us to conquer as the Singaporeans emerged as victors early Sunday morning. Next up was veterans’ soccer and this was a crucial game, not because of pride, but due to the need to keep Malaysia in a commanding position as the final games for cricket, ladies soccer and premier soccer had gotten underway. Veterans’ soccer had been postponed from yesterday, after the organisers claimed that a rally had put paid the chance of playing soccer on a Saturday afternoon. Really? Last minute change of venue and placing games all over the island are soon becoming a habit!
On a cold, drizzly morning at the SCC Dempsey Road mud field, 14 Malaysian veterans took on their Singaporean counterparts in the hope of securing another point for Malaysia. They may have been classified as “veterans”, but make no mistake; Captain See Kwong Yen and his men were all young at heart and played with vim, vigour and determination!
The game was mired with mis-timed tackles, fouls and loss of temper among players. It did not help that the referee blew questionable decisions. Players soon fell for theatrics rather than skills. Malaysia open scored in the 20 minutes when Peter Douglas Ling, fresh from his exploits at pool last night, tapped in a cross from Ganesh Perumal after the Singapore keeper did a "David James" and flapped at the cross.
10 minutes later, Ganesh Perumal helped himself to a goal to give Malaysia a deserved 2-0 lead at the halftime. Singapore came back strongly after some harsh words from their convenor, Bala. Their player, Nandakumar, then capitalised on some poor defending and gave Singapore some hope with a goal. The Malaysians rallied strongly. Packing their midfield and tackling every ball, they soon marshalled forward with Ganesh Perumal and Peter Douglas Ling again. Forcing the Singaporeans to make mistakes, they soon committed a foul outside their penalty box. Fortunately, the referee made the correct decision by blowing for a freekick.
In came Ganesh Perumal again, who took the freekick. An exquisite right bender, he curled the ball into the top right hand corner of the Singapore goal! The Singaporeans could only watch in amazement as the Malaysians celebrated, and more importantly, regained their two goal advantage. More tackles flied in and more bad temper was exhibited. The game became extremely feisty and in the ensuing melee, Captain Intekhab Khan succeed to pull one back for Singapore.
It was a nervous moment for Captain See Kwong Yen and the supporters of the Malaysian team, who included Lim Chee Wee, President of the Malaysian Bar, and Brendan Siva, who were present to lend their support. Michael Hwang SC, President of the Law Society of Singapore, was also there to cheer on the Singaporeans. The defence and our makeshift goalkeeper, Collin Swee, pulled off some good saves and tackles, thus keeping Malaysia ahead.
The final whistle was greeted with so much joy and excitement as Malaysia managed to win yet another point and continued their winning streak in veterans’ soccer. Malaysia won 3-2. Well done, team Malaysia!
