The day started early for the Malaysian netball team, as team members started streaming into the hotel coffeehouse at 6:30 am to have their “breakfast of champions”. It was very inspiring to see such dedication and team camaraderie.

The team bus left for the Jurong Recreational Centre at 7:30 am, and the team’s energy was at a high.  It was ironic to see nail clippers being tossed around the bus, especially since netball is not known for being a contact sport.

The team arrived early – at about 8:15 am – and the players started to warm up and run drills.  The mood was a mixed, on one hand, serious, but on the other, light.  After a short delay due to rain, the referees turned and the game was finally afoot.

The game was hard fought from the first whistle.  The audience rooted for their favourite teams and the Malaysian boosters were no slouches either.  Among them were Chief Justice of Malaysia YAA Tun Dato’ Seri Zaki b Tun Azmi, and Bar Council members Lim Chee Wee and Christopher Leong (President and Vice-President of the Malaysian Bar, respectively), Andrew Khoo, Jaspal Singh Gill and Anand Ponnudurai, who enthusiastically cheered the team on from the bleachers.

As the game wore on, it was evident we were witnessing two distinct styles of play.  The Malaysians, who displayed their finesse, saw fit to control the tempo with a steady and deliberate play, while the Singaporeans, playing a faster and more robust game, engaged the Malaysians with a physical style of play and were not afraid to hustle.

In the end, we were left wondering over the eternal question in sports: which would triumph – finesse or physical play?  Alas, no answer was forthcoming as the game ended in a draw.  The Malaysians led the whole time but when push, literally, came to shove, the Singaporeans rallied, jostled and fought back for possession and managed to finally level the score at 19-19 before the final whistle was blown.

It is likely this game between the Malaysians and the Singaporeans will go down as one of the more intriguing games of the Malaysia/Singapore Bench and Bar Games, and may well be talked about in the years to come.

The scores between Malaysia and Singapore for the game at the end of each quarter stood at 5-3, 9-9, 15-11 and finally 19-19.

Not just there to play and cheer, a team of web reporters will provide regular updates on the Malaysia/Singapore Bench and Bar Games 2011. For ease of reference, all reports will bear the heading "B&B 42".  Watch this space.
