KUALA LUMPUR: THE Malaysian Bar Council extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on Friday is expected to discuss the effect of the Legal Profession (Amendment) Bill 2006.
The meeting to be held at 3pm at Wisma MCA, Jalan Ampang here, will focus on the grant of a blank cheque to an administrative tribunal to ignore all judicial safeguards against abuse of power, by placing both substantive and procedural matters within its purview.
Members of the Bar, particularly those in the Klang Valley have been urged to attend the meeting to achieve a quorum of 2,500 members and to mandate the Bar Council to request authorities in suspending the operation of these oppressive and “secretive” Disciplinary Board provisions.
Registration begins at 1pm and members are advised to use the LRT. Food will be served.

USE OF "BLANK CHEQUE" VIOLENCE TO THE LANGUAGE written by Stephen Tan Ban Cheng,

The use of the phrase "blank cheque" in this context shows and shows all too clearly that the call for the EGM may be a bridge too far.
"Blank cheque" used displays, in this instance, the work of violence in the language.
It is NOTABLE that up till now, you have not distanced yourself from the display of aggressive behaviour at Saturday's Forum.
It is NOTABLE that up till now, you have not supported my call for the release of the tapes of the proceedings despite the fact that no secrecy rules need to be overcome.
This failure, thought together with your call for transparency renders your call HOLLOW because the discussions under the LPA were conducted withinb the constraints of the Official Secrets Act.
Up till now, you have yet to acklnowledge and concede this point.
Again, I am of the view that the EGM is not necessary as there are other ways to resolve mattters.
Pressure tactics, confrontational approaches, and semantic gymnastics are not my cup of tea.
And, by the way, with the greatest of respect, when did you become a spokesman for the Malaysian Bar Council?
