KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Bar Council Friday welcomed the
cabinet's call for immediate investigations by the Attorney-General's Chambers
on individuals identified for alleged wrongdoings, as contained in the Royal
Commission of Inquiry into the V.K. Lingam video clip report.
Its president Ambiga Sreenevasan said the investigations were necessary to show
the government's commitment to ascertaining the truth.
"Investigations without fear or favour must be conducted quickly as in the past,
files of cases appeared to have been closed," she told Bernama here.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim announced Friday
that the cabinet had decided that the report be made public, and immediate
investigations be carried out into allegations made against individuals
identified in the report.
Last Saturday, Commission chairman, former Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Haidar
Mohamed Noor, in his personal capacity, also expressed the need for the inquiry
report to be made public after handing over the 186-page report to Yang
di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.
During the 17-day inquiry from Jan 14, the Royal Commission heard evidence from
21 witnesses, including former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Among the names that cropped up in the recorded telephone conversation between
lawyer V.K. Lingam and someone, believed to be a senior judge, on the
appointment of judges, were former Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's
Department Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor, tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan and former
Chief Justices, Tun Mohamed Eusoff Chin and Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim.
