Bar Council's motion to increase subscription fees defeated PDF Print E-mail

Bar AGM 2008 Bar Council: Repeal ISA

KUALA LUMPUR, Sat: The motion by the Bar Council to increase the subscription fees was defeated today in the 62nd annual general meeting of the Malaysian Bar held here at the Legend Hotel even though the proposed increase was amended to RM600.

Earlier, the quorum of 500 was obtained at 10.35am but only 678 members turned up for the AGM.

When the motion to increase the annual subscription to RM700 was debated, 181 members voted to amend the figure to RM600 against 166 members voting to amend it to RM525. But when the motion to increase it by RM600 was finally put to the vote, 214 members voted against it with 192 members voting for it.

The results of the other motions are as follows:

Motion on judiciary by Renuka Subramaniam and Latheefa Koya: Withdrawn

Motion on rules governing general meetings by P. Suppiah: In Favour - 32, Against - 78, Abstention - 12. Motion not carried.

Motion on rules governing conduct of general meetings by the Bar Council: In Favour - 93, Against - 12, Abstention - 5. Motion carried.

Motion by the Bar Council on determining the viability of a Self Insured Fund: In Favour - 135, Against - 1, Abstention - 2. Motion carried.

Motion by the Bar Council to repeal the ISA: House unanimously in favour. Motion carried.

• Vote of No-Confidence motion in the Bar Council by Lian Meng Wah: In Favour - 5, Against - 167, Abstention - 30. Motion not carried.

Vote of No-Confidence motion in the Disciplinary Board by Major MS Murthi: In Favour - 11, Against - 110, Abstention - 21. Motion not carried.

Motion on the KL LAC by R. Ragunanthanan a/l E. Ramuloor: In Favour - 49, Against - 101, Abstention - 13. Motion not carried.

Motion on reform of Legal Aid Scheme by Nachammai a/p KMS Kumarappan Chettiar: Motion Withdrawn

In the first Bar Council meeting held immediately after the AGM, the outgoing office bearers, namely Ambiga Sreenevasan, Ragunath Kesavan, Lim Chee Wee and George Varughese were also returned unopposed as the President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Malaysian Bar respectively for the 2008/2009 term.
