PETALING JAYA: If you are innocent, clear your name with the police.

Until such time, police will not let up and will continue to publish the names of lawyers whose cases have been left "hanging in the air".

This was the message from the nation’s top cop to 25 lawyers whose names, pictures and addresses were published recently.

The lawyers were wanted for criminal cases, including criminal breach of trust.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan defended the move to release the details saying there had been a long delay in solving the cases, some of which dated back more than two years.

"We only published the details as we could not solve the cases because we could not find them," he said at the district police headquarters here yesterday after the launch of a nationwide courtesy campaign for policemen in collaboration with the Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry.

Musa said most of the lawyers were believed to have left the country.

He said there should not be a problem, as the investigation was conducted on the request of the Bar Council.

"They sent us a letter with a list of names and police report numbers. We investigated and found that some of the lawyers listed are involved in the misappropriation of money given by their clients.

"So there shouldn’t be a problem as this is just a report from police to the Bar Council as the people named are on the list of lawyers with the Bar Council," said Musa.

Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Ramli Yusuf said a representative from the Bar Council had come to see him recently.

"But it is not the representative that should come forward as we only want to talk to and take down the statements of the lawyers whose names and pictures we had released," Ramli said.

On the possibility that some of the lawyers may take legal action against the police for publishing their details, he said: "I am just doing my job.

"Let them do it (take legal action) as I am not afraid."

Earlier, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim launched the courtesy campaign titled Mesra dan Senyum (Smile and be Friendly).

The campaign encourages policemen to be courteous when interacting with the public.
